Handa student, Eva Borgwardt, wins Truman Scholarship

Stanford junior Eva Borgwardt, who has been a key contributor to the Handa Center's Virtual Tribunals initiative, recently won the Truman Scholarship for graduate studies. Only 62 students across America received the prestigious $30,000 scholarship, designated for outstanding scholars to pursue a graduate program in preparation for careers in public service.

“We were so thrilled to learn Eva would be honored as a Truman Scholar,” said Handa Center Associate Director, Penelope Van Tuyl, who supervises Eva’s work on the Virtual Tribunals, and has known Eva since she was a student in HUMRTS 101. “She is a  thoughtful and intelligent young woman with tremendous leadership skills. It’s so great to see a student like her being recognized in this way. Eva has been a joy to work with, and we can’t wait to see the path she forges after Stanford."

In addition to her work with the Handa Center, Eva has been heavily involved with student organizations in advocating for peace, security and social justice in Israel and Palestine.

Eva plans to pursue a JD degree and a master’s degree in global affairs. “I’m so grateful for this opportunity to pursue a graduate education that will give me more tools to keep fighting for the issues I care about, including a just future for both Israelis and Palestinians, and a U.S.-Israel relationship that is based in values of democracy and equality for all,” she said.
