Handa Center to Integrate Core Activities of CDDRL's Program on Human Rights

In 2014, the WSD HANDA Center for Human Rights and International Justice was established at Stanford University as a new center within the Stanford Global Studies Division under the School of Humanities and Science. The Handa Center brings to Stanford an exciting portfolio of international projects and a mandate to serve undergraduate demand for academic and professional opportunities in the field of human rights.

At the close of the past academic year, Helen Stacy, director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law’s (CDDRL) Program on Human Rights (PHR) announced her retirement. In an effort to streamline undergraduate engagement with human rights opportunities on campus, CDDRL leadership asked the Handa Center to absorb the core PHR programming that has been so popular with Stanford students since 2009. The Handa Center enthusiastically agreed, and looks forward to expanding its support for undergraduates through career and academic advising, new course offerings, research opportunities, campus events, and student fellowship funding.

CDDRL remains committed to human rights as an important theme in its programming and the Handa Center looks forward to collaboration between the centers on events, as well as on new community-engaged research and learning initiatives in the field of human rights.
